For Beth, For Trevor

Poems

We all start our lives
Naked
And bare
Seeking delicate comfort for those first few
Who stare
Yet, lovingly back.

In our first home we each find,
That wondrous beginning.

And In Between those beautiful grins we grow

Into knees that bruise and bend
Hands that reach
For toy
For friend

Then at once
Gleefully we leap
Out that screened front door.

The company we keep
Gathering that forest floor
A second home for these new wayward beginners
Once so blissfully adored.

Built,rebuilt,
Moved, removed.
Every fort, every castle
Could be improved

Yet try as we might
We still find our way home at night
No moss, no squirrel, no perfect stick,
Can quiet keep us from getting home sick

So we carry on,
Attached to that first hearth and dear home,
Still Roaming
in search of something that feels known.

Till one
arbitrary
day the sun rises
A little higher,
We daringly aspire
And jump
an unfamiliar stream
And find a reflection
doe eyed
A dream
Staring yet,
lovingly back.

Written for the wedding ceremony of two friends, Beth and Trevor.
